Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Dhemaji: Overview:
Dhemaji district is one of the remote rural districts in the State. It has rich source of livestock and it plays a vital role in the upliftment of socio-economic development of rural and semi urban areas of the state of the District since inception. There are 12 No’s of State Veterinary Dispensary and 16 Nos. Veterinary sub centre/stockman centre across the District for rendering veterinary services. As per the 19th Livestock Census 2012, there were total cattle population 4,69,219, buffaloes 21635, goats 143,154 no’s, sheep-778, pig 132,427 , Fowl- 604542 and Duck 224774 nos.
Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Dhemaji : Duties and Responsibilities
Strengthen rural economy and alleviation of poverty through scaling up animal husbandry practices.
Objectives of Veterinary Department:
- To increase meat production
- To increase milk production
- To increase egg production
To achieve these objectives Veterinary Department is undertaken the following duties and responsibilities:
- Treatment and vaccination for prevention and relief of animal suffering from diseases.
- Artificial Insemination (AI) services to the crossbred, local cows, buffaloes and goat to increase milk production as well as meat production for goat.
- Extension services, Training to the farmers in the field level to scaling up the veterinary farming.
- Food safety and control of zoonotic and emerging diseases.
- Encourage the youths for self employment through different animal husbandry farming

- Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) control programme under RKVY
- Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) control programme
- Departmental routine vaccination proramme of HS & BQ, Swine fever, Goat pox, Entero toxemia, Brucellosis, Anthrax, Ranikhet, Duck plaque etc. under Institute of Veterinary Biological, Khanapara, Guwahati-22
- Rural Infrastructure Development fund (RIDF)
- Livestock Insurance/Risk management under National Livestock Mission ( NLM)
- Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS) through NABARD
- Entrepreneurship Development and employment generation (EDEG) through NABARD
- Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) for Piggery farming.
