DHEMAJI MUNICIPAL BOARD

 

 

Introduction:

Dhemaji Municipal Board is the principal urban local body under the Dhemaji district, located on the north bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River. Established in the year 1977 with an initial jurisdiction of 4 wards, the Board has since played a pivotal role in the town’s governance and development. According to the 2011 Census, Dhemaji town had a population of 12816. Following ward delimitation in 2014–2015, the number of wards has increased to 10 to accommodate the town’s growing population and administrative needs. Dhemaji is widely recognized for its vibrant commercial activities, significantly boosted by its connectivity to Dibrugarh district through the Bogibeel Bridge and to the state of Arunachal Pradesh, making it a strategic urban hub in Northeast India.

Our History:-

The Dhemaji Municipal Board began its journey in 1977 as a Town Committee with 4 wards. Over time, as the town expanded and its governance needs evolved, it was upgraded to a Municipal Board. Since then, the Board has continually worked to support urban growth and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Our Mandate:-

The Dhemaji Municipal Board is entrusted with:

  • Formulating policies and monitoring programmes addressing all aspects of urban development.
  • Creating vibrant, inclusive, efficient, and sustainable urban habitats.
  • Ensuring a clean environment and fostering greener neighborhoods for a healthier urban society

Key Programs and Schemes:-

The Board is actively implementing key national urban missions, including:

  • Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0): Improving urban sanitation and solid waste management.
  • Prime Minister Awas Yojana - Urban (PMAY-U): Ensuring affordable housing for economically weaker sections.

 

Achievements:-

  • Commissioned a 5 KLD Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) within the stipulated timeline.
  • Completed 1575 houses under PMAY-U out of 2496 allotted.
  • Installed 282 streetlights, including high-mast and solar-powered units.
  • Provided piped water connections to 600 households.
  • Distributed dustbins to commercial establishments to support solid waste segregation.
  • Initiated a sewage treatment plant to serve a projected population of 68.6 lakh.
  • Established a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for efficient waste processing.

 

  • Constructed 1894 Nos. Individual Household Latrines under SBM-U; started Door-to-Door waste collection in all 10 wards of Dhemaji.
  • Constructed an aspirational public toilet near Court Field for public use, enhancing sanitation and accessibility in a high-footfall area.
  • Successfully launched Property Tax collection from urban households, generating Rs. 80.45 lakhs during last year 2024-25.
  • Formed 576 Urban Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to promote livelihood and social empowerment.
  • Linked 264 SHGs with formal credit under the Self-Employment Programme.
  • Trained and certified 1040 individuals under the Employment through Skill Training & Placement (EST&P) initiative
  • Conducted socio-economic profiling for 83.6% of street vendors to link them to social security schemes

Future Plans:-

Looking ahead, the Dhemaji Municipal Board is focused on driving holistic urban transformation through strategic development initiatives. Future plans include:

  • Expansion of the urban water supply network to ensure safe and reliable drinking water for all households.
  • Development of smart infrastructure including digital monitoring systems for sanitation and solid waste management.
  • Upgradation of roads and drainage systems to enhance urban mobility and reduce waterlogging
  • Establishment of more public amenities such as community parks, modern public toilets, and recreational spaces.
  • Strengthening of citizen engagement through e-governance and transparent service delivery mechanisms.

These initiatives aim to make Dhemaji a modern, resilient, and citizen-centric urban center that meets the aspirations of its growing population.

 

The Dhemaji Municipal Board remains committed to inclusive development, good governance, and sustainable urban living. By combining strategic planning with grassroots engagement, the Board continues to work toward transforming Dhemaji into a model urban center in Assam.
