District Agriculture Office
Department of Agriculture, Dhemaji
Introduction
Dhemaji district, located in the northeastern state of Assam, is known for its picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and agricultural prominence. Situated in the easternmost part of Assam, Dhemaji shares its borders with Arunachal Pradesh to the north and east, Lakhimpur district to the west, and the mighty Brahmaputra River to the south. The district is characterized by an extensive network of rivers and tributaries, making it prone to annual floods but also contributing to its fertile land and rich biodiversity. Agriculture is the backbone of Dhemaji’s economy, with a majority of its population engaged in farming. The district's alluvial soil, deposited by rivers like the Brahmaputra, Subansiri, and Jiadhol, supports the cultivation of a variety of crops. Paddy (rice) is the primary crop, followed by mustard, pulses, sugarcane, and vegetables. The region also sees a growing interest in horticulture, with crops like banana, orange, and pineapple being cultivated. Despite challenges like frequent floods, Dhemaji remains an important agricultural hub in Assam, with efforts being made to promote sustainable and flood-resistant farming practices.
